Employability skills for the 21st Century Learner

Many years ago I started my career teaching on a course specifically designed for women returning to work; in reality many of the women had never worked at all having had children in their early teens.  This course was heavily funded for three years and extremely popular with an average class size of 30.  Many of the women had low self esteem; several had never completed their education and desperately wanted to get off the “benefit cycle”. I taught…

Welcome back – here’s something that is a mixture of fun and inspiration.

First a short video of Mark an English teacher and poet- rapping in the classroom.

The second video of Mark at a rapping contest with a student.   I would encourage you to listen to the student’s view of education as he raps.  BE WARNED! There is a bit of swearing in this video (not sure that teachers should be allowed to swear?).

To give you some context: The rap challenge is meant to be a slanging match.  It has the appearance of being quite hostile but it is part of…

Do teachers need to change their teaching strategies to adapt to the digital world

I have taught English in vocational college for 13 years; my students range from NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training), MLDs  (mild-moderate learning difficulties) and low level achievers.  Over the years I have experimented with ideas that were (and still) perceived as unconventional (which led to meetings with my manager to “explain my actions”).

Groups consist of NEETs, ADHD, dyslexia, or behavioural issues - so…

Continuing profession development (CPD)

It is so annoying, I seem unable to pass the 9 pm watershed of keeping awake while reading a piece of research - I just can’t keep my eyes open!  Why does this matter?  Well you see I suffer from an affliction called “super busy-ness”. It’s a common condition which leaves me severely lacking in time and constantly looking to ways to use my time more effectively... for…

Anything I can do, we can do better!

Have you ever...Attended a CPD session where you learned everything except what you really came for?Left during a CPD session, because you had to attend to other urgent matters?Fallen asleep during a CPD session because it was utterly boring and irrelevant to you?And we could go on, but let's move on to... Yes, it is frustrating attending Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions that are not tailored to exactly what we really want or need to learn. On the other hand, it is quite…See More

Are you preparing your students for future work skills?

FE News (UK) reported this week on a lack of employment readiness in the world of work as its biggest obstacle preventing employers from taking on long term unemployed via the Work Programme, according to the survey: Alderwood Education, surveyed 400 specialists working within the employability and skills sectors. It found 45% of them considered work readiness to be the highest concern and 20.8% ranked literacy and numeracy as another key concern of employers. It is essential that the workforce,…See More

Start small ...

We teach in amazing times. Just think about the technology that you carry around in your pocket or the things you are able to do on the Internet. Technology makes meaningful collaborative and engaging interactive classroom experiences possible with minimal effort, eg students use their mobile phones to text feedback in “real time” poll  (Poll Everywhere … easy to set up in 10 minutes).1. I wanna be a ‘cool’ teacher!

Let’s look at some of the ways you can be seen as cool by your students. By ‘cool’ I  mean that you are aware of trends and actively engaging to stay on top of what your students use and need... it’s important for teachers to be cool.TweetTwitter is fast becoming the place for education professionals and students to easily meet, interact, and exchange ideas online.  Twitter is one of the easiest ways to reach fellow teachers who may be able to help you decide which lesson to teach…See More

Ten Tips for Personalised Learning via Technology

1. Deliver Instruction through Multiple Forms of MediaTeachers use computers and whiteboards to access oodles of instructional videos, audio clips, animations, and interactive games, some through software and some available online. Students also cement their knowledge by doing hands-on activities with these media.2. Gather and Use Immediate Feedback on Students' UnderstandingWhy wait days or weeks to deliver and grade a quiz to find out which learners missed important concepts? Teachers here…See More
